LINK Internship:
Animas High School offers a unique program to their juniors. Leading Internships for New Knowledge sends juniors on three-week internships in the field of their choice. During LINK, students have no regular classes as they spend 30-40 hours a week with mentors in the workplace, learning how to apply their skills outside the classroom.

Business
I did my internship at Counter Kulture a company that works with concrete creating products like sinks, fireplaces, sculptures, and so much more. Along with Counter Kulture, they have a separate business called Van Labs that works in the same facility. Van Labs creates high-quality van build-outs. I worked with both companies but mostly did work for Counter Kulture.

Preperation
My preparation for this internship was a little different than the others. During my junior year when I typically would have planed and participated in my LINK internship, I was on a Rotary Youth Exchange in Colombia. My plan had been to complete my LINK during my senior year, but when I was sent home early because of Covid-19 I knew that was my chance to get involved and start planing. Ever since I started thinking about LINK I knew I wanted to do it with Counter Kulture. This mix of Art and Engineering really interested me. I got in contact with the owners and we started creating a plan. By the time it got to the end of May COVID had calmed down a little and that was when I started my internship.
Reflection
From interning with Counter Kulture I learned so much about business management, working with concrete, and creating high-quality products. I also learned so much about myself, and something I may want to pursue in the future. I learned that I am really good at taking what I learned and applying it. The people I worked with put a lot of trust in me. They would tell me what I needed to get done and I would do it. I learned that it is important to ask questions when you need to so you do things right the first time. I also learned that it is ok to make mistakes. I was so scared of messing up but then realized that even they make mistakes, and when they did they just problem-solved a way to fix it. I think the most important thing that I took away from this experience is that in my future I want to pursue something where I can use both my artistic side and my science side. That I do best with hands-on projects. Because of LINK internships, I now am applying to an industrial design program and know a little more about a job I may want to pursue.
Project
For my project I created a fire place and a bathroom countertop for my house. It was really cool taking what I learned and putting my own touch on it to create a product, and then installing it in my house to see everyday.
